A little life

I've seen the flame to a spoon
I was twelve years old on the dark side of the moon
Five grown men inside a toilet booth
One man, looking through the eyes of his youth
I've seen the garden of love
From the thorns in the bush to the roses above
It was three years later in the bending of trust
That my flower withdrew from the thickening mud
And so I hopped on a plane
To a faraway land, where my family was made
So long to the friends who had beg me to stay
This was the path I had to take

And then there was love
When she'd rest her head when the days got tough
Twenty-three years old, but I felt enough
We were soon becoming us, oh
And what I'd never seen
As the days got old, and the nights grew weak
She was just enough in the winter heat
There she was in front of me, was in front of me

And then it came, the day we wed
A time of joy and a time of regret
The tears were counting up their debt
To my other side, she'd never met
And we moved forward, but I still know
The guilt and shame, from the night I stole
Forever haunts this child in tow
Will follow me down the long brick road

A life, a smile, a man's best friend
I felt like I'd been saved again
Twenty-eight long years, now on the mend
To a past I thought I'd seen the end
So we set sail on something new
To counter all the darker truths
So I tried to give my best to you
If it's all I'd ever do, all I'd ever do

At times I think about the child
Who held so close to me, when all went running wild
He'd hide himself away, and refuse to smile
This was a life in denial
And so I found an avenue, oh
Thirty years too long to rid the darkest blues
She stayed on side, to untie any seeming clues

And so it came our greatest gift
He shows me how life truly is
The darkness fell right off the cliff
What kind of garden of love is this?
And here we stand, all well and true
He's on the brightest side of the moon
The circle rolls right into view
And I've come to peace
