Serj Tankian ist ein armenisch-amerikanischer Sänger, Musiker und Musikproduzent, der vor allem als Leadsänger und Hauptkomponist der amerikanischen Metalband System of a Down bekannt ist. Geboren 1967 in Armenien aus armenischen Eltern, die in die Vereinigten Staaten emigrierten, begann Tankian seine musikalische Karriere mit Klavier und Gesang in Kirchenchören. 1994 gründete er zusammen mit Daron Malakian, Shavo Odadjian und John Dolmayan System of a Down und wurde schnell zu einem der einflussreichsten Bands im Alternative-Metal-Genre. Seine kraftvolle und vielseitige Stimme sowie oft politische und gesellschaftliche Texte trugen zum internationalen Erfolg der Band bei. Neben seiner Arbeit mit System of a Down hat Tankian eine erfolgreiche Solokarriere hingelegt und mehrere Studioalben veröffentlicht, darunter "Elect the Dead" (2007), "Imperfect Harmonies" (2010) und "Harakiri" (2012).
