Fates Warning ist eine progressive Metal-Band, die 1983 in Hartford, Connecticut, von John Arch (Gesang), Jim Matheos (Gitarre), Victor Arduini (Bass), Joe DiBiase (Schlagzeug) und Steve Zimmerman (Keyboard) gegründet wurde. Als Pioniere des Genres trugen sie maßgeblich zur Definition des progressiven Metals bei, wie es auf Alben wie *Parallels* (1986) und *Awaken the Guardian* (1988) zu hören ist. Diese Alben zeichnen sich durch komplexe Melodien, schwere Riffs und philosophische Texte aus. Nach Arch's Ausstieg 1989 arbeitete die Band mit verschiedenen Sängern zusammen, darunter Ray Alder, der den modernen Sound des Albums wie *Inside Out* (1994) und *A Pleasant Shade of Gray* (1997) prägte. Fates Warning sind für ihre energiegeladenen Live-Auftritte und ihr Engagement für den progressiven Metal bekannt.
