This Mortal Coil è stato un supergruppo dream pop guidato da Ivo Watts-Russell, fondatore dell'etichetta discografica britannica 4AD. Sebbene Watts-Russell e John Fryer fossero tecnicamente gli unici due membri ufficiali, l'output discografico della band ha visto una vasta rotazione di artisti ospiti, molti dei quali erano sotto contratto con la 4AD o in qualche modo associati a essa. Circa la metà delle canzoni pubblicate erano cover, spesso di artisti psichedelici e folk degli anni '60 e '70, che hanno dimostrato il posto di questi due generi nella storia e nella formazione del dream pop.
