Dopo aver completato il tour della 3 Canadian Idol, la Jepsen si ritirò per concentrarsi nella scrittura e nella registrazione di nuove canzoni e nel completamento di una band. I suoi demo attirarono molta attenzione ed ha firmato un accordo con la Simkin Artist Management e con la Dexter Entertainment. Il 16 giugno 2008 Carly ha lanciato il suo primo singolo di debutto, una cover della canzone di John Denver Sunshine on My Shoulders. Il 21 giugno 2008 aggiunge due nuove canzoni sulla sua pagina di Myspace: Bucket e Heavy Lifting.
