Carlton Ray Scott, nato a Semora, North Carolina, è un artista country americano. Ha iniziato la sua prima band all'età di 19 anni e in seguito si è trasferito ad Atlanta, Georgia, per frequentare l'Istituto di Business Musicale. Dopo aver conseguito una laurea associata, si è trasferito a Raleigh, North Carolina, dove ha formato un'altra band prima di trasferirsi ancora, questa volta a Nashville, Tennessee. Mentre era lì, Ray iniziò a scrivere canzoni e ottenne due successi in classifica come autore: «A Few Questions» di Clay Walker e «Pray for the Fish» di Randy Travis.
