Fondati da Ian MacKaye (voce) e Jeff Nelson (chitarra), la band ha influenzato profondamente la musica punk con un sound crudo e veloce, caratterizzato da riff aggressivi e testi politici e sociali. Il loro brano più famoso, «Straight Edge», è diventato l'inno di un movimento culturale che promuoveva uno stile di vita libero da alcol, droghe e sesso prematrimoniale.
