Uncle Tupelo è stato un gruppo musicale alternative country proveniente da Belleville, Illinois, attivo dal 1987 al 1994. Il trio formato da Jay Farrar, Jeff Tweedy e Mike Heidorn si è formato dopo che il cantante del loro precedente gruppo, The Primitives, ha lasciato per frequentare l'università. Il gruppo ha registrato tre album per Rockville Records prima di firmare con Sire Records e espandersi a un quintetto. Poco dopo la pubblicazione dell'album di debutto per l'etichetta maggiore *Anodyne*, Farrar ha annunciato la sua decisione di lasciare il gruppo a causa di una relazione deteriorata con il suo co-autore Tweedy.
