Green nacque a Forrest City, in Arkansas. Figlio di un mezzadro, iniziò a esibirsi a nove anni in un quartetto musicale di Forrest City chiamato i "fratelli Greene" (eliminò la "e" dal suo cognome anni dopo, quando lavorava come solista).
