The Sisters of Mercy sind eine britische Gothic-Rock-Band, die Ende der 1970er Jahre aus der Post-Punk-Szene hervorging. Gegründet wurde die Band 1980 in Leeds von Andrew Eldritch (Gesang), und im Laufe ihrer Geschichte gab es mehrere Besetzungswechsel, wobei Paul Hession (Gitarre) und Wayne Hussey (Gitarre) zu den langjährigsten Mitgliedern gehörten. Ihr Sound, geprägt von düsteren Atmosphären, finsteren Melodien und nachdenklichen Texten, katapultierte sie schnell in die britische Goth-Underground-Szene. Mitte der 1980er Jahre erreichten The Sisters of Mercy mit Alben wie *First and Last and Always* (1985) und *Vision Thing* (1987) einen bedeutenden kommerziellen Erfolg, was ihrem Sound ein breiteres Publikum erschloss. Stücke wie «Temple of Love», «This Corrosion» und «Lucretia My Reflection» wurden zu Klassikern des Gothic-Rocks. Nach einer Reihe von Konflikten mit ihrem Plattenlabel beendete die Band 1990 die Veröffentlichung neuer Musik.
