Nato a Chiswick, quartiere sudoccidentale di Londra, scopre la sua "vocazione" musicale all'età di 5 anni quando gli zii gli regalano una batteria giocattolo in occasione del Natale; più tardi i genitori gli comprano batterie vere, sempre più complete. Non impara ancora la notazione musicale, ma continua a suonare accompagnando la radio o la televisione, sviluppando un metodo proprio[1]. A 12 anni fonda il suo primo complesso. A 14 anni entra nella Barbara Speake Stage School, dando inizio ad una carriera come attore e modello. Appare come comparsa per pochi secondi nel film sui Beatles Tutti per uno. Fa un provino anche per Romeo e Giulietta, ma senza successo. Nel 1970, Collins suona le percussioni nella canzone Art of Dying, contenuta nell'LP All Things Must Pass, di George Harrison[2]. Pur continuando con la carriera di attore, si capisce che è molto portato per la musica. Con il suo gruppo The Freehold scrive la sua prima canzone, "Lying Crying Dying". La sua prima incisione giunge con i Flaming Youth, per cui suona come batterista nell'album ARK 2 (1969). Il concept album si ispira al grande evento del periodo, quello dello sbarco americano sulla Luna, ma non ha un grande successo. Nonostante Melody Maker lo descriva come "migliore album pop del mese"[1], dopo un anno il gruppo si disgrega.
