John Cale ist ein walisischer Musiker und Komponist, geboren 1942. Nach seinem Musikstudium in London und New York trat er 1965 den The Velvet Underground bei und prägte deren experimentellen und einzigartigen Sound in den ersten beiden Alben maßgeblich mit. Cale führte das drone-artige Violaspiel ein, das Songs wie "Venus In Furs" so bahnbrechend machte. Nach dem Album *White Light/White Heat* verließ er die Band aufgrund musikalischer Differenzen mit Lou Reed. Während Cale experimentelle Klänge weiter erforschen wollte, strebte Reed nach einfacheren Pop-Songs, was sich in den beiden Velvet Underground-Alben ohne Cale widerspiegelte: *The Velvet Underground* und *Loaded*.
