Sam Cooke (1931-1964) war ein legendärer amerikanischer Sänger, Songwriter und Musikproduzent, der als einer der Pioniere der Soul-Musik gilt. Geboren in Clarksdale, Mississippi, begann Cooke seine musikalische Karriere mit Gospel-Gesang in seiner örtlichen Kirche. 1957 unterschrieb er bei Saratoga Records und veröffentlichte Hits wie „You Send Me“, die ihn zum Popstar machten. Cooke gründete anschließend sein eigenes Musiklabel, The Soul Stirrers, und setzte die Aufnahme erfolgreicher Gospelsongs fort. In den 1960er Jahren etablierte sich Cooke als einer der größten Soul-Künstler mit Alben wie „Ain't That Good News“ und „Live at the Harlem Square Club“, die durch fesselnde Melodien und tiefgründige Texte gekennzeichnet sind. Sein reicher und kraftvoller Gesangsstil, seine musikalische Sensibilität und seine Lieder, die soziale Themen wie Rassengleichheit behandelten, machten ihn zu einer kulturellen Ikone von großer Bedeutung. Cooke wurde 1964 im Alter von 33 Jahren ermordet und hinterließ eine unüberbrückbare Lücke in der amerikanischen Musik.
