Elf è stata una rock band americana formatasi alla fine degli anni '60 e all'inizio degli anni '70. Il gruppo, noto per un sound che mescolava elementi di honky tonk con riff rock basici, ha visto la partecipazione di Ronnie James Dio, futuro frontman di Rainbow, Black Sabbath e Dio. Gli album di Elf includono "Elf", "Trying to Burn the Sun" e "Carolina County Ball". All'interno delle loro canzoni si possono già intravedere le influenze musicali che caratterizzeranno il percorso artistico di Dio in seguito. La band ha spesso aperto per Deep Purple, con cui condivideva l'etichetta discografica e organizzava tour congiunti. La collaborazione tra Dio e Ritchie Blackmore, chitarrista dei Deep Purple, porterà alla nascita di Rainbow nel 1975.
