Ohio-born singer-songwriter Chrissie Hynde moved to London in the mid 70s, where she found employment at the NME and later in Malcolm McClaren's famed clothing store Sex (ground zero for the UK punk rock movement). On their chart-topping self-titled debut, the Pretenders unfurled a wiry sound that combined the fast pace and dramatic delivery of new wave with a radio-friendly pop sound that harkened back to the classic rock of the late 60s and early 70s. In the group's 20 year history -- which weathered several drug-related deaths -- Hynde's sexy vocals and dramatic story-driven tunes increasingly became the group's focal point, though they never recaptured the success of their earliest work.
